ARTE LATINO CULTURAL PROJECT
For 20 years ARTE LATINO CULTURAL PROJECT (artLat), has been committed to create projects that reflect an Intercultural exchange between Latin America and The UK. Our organisation with the support of Arts Council of England has produced national touring works in the UK and abroad with sold out tours from previous works such as Romance D’Carnaval, Tiempo de Tango, Tango Nuevo and Amazonas Spectacular amongst others. Through art and creativity artLAT has played and important part in the relationship between local communities/grass roots organisations and ethnic minorities of Latin America heritage.
In 2022 for the development of Imagine Colombia Festival of Arts and Peace, artLat is inviting to reflect on the presence of Latino population in Southwark and their contribution to build the diverse social fabric of the borough. The 2011 Census shows that there were around 83,000 Latin Americans living in London, the boroughs that host more of our Latino population are Southwark and Lambeth, a further 11,149 second-generation Latin Americans were accounted for. The concentrations of Latin Americans in Inner London reflects historical patterns of settlement with commercial and cultural activity in Southwark, where significant commercial areas are identified as of Latin American origin, mainly around the Elephant & Castle, Camberwell and Peckham areas. Important to notice that 86% of all Latin Americans in London are of working age between 18 and 59 years old.
It is very positive that Southwark Council was one of the first boroughs to include the category of “Latin American” as an ethnic group, this action we believe can assist the fostering of a culturally-informed engagement strategy from the Council in partnership with Latin-American arts-based organisations. Our rich heritage, skills, strengths and flow of creative art leaders are indicative of our community capacity to grow, integrate, participate and contribute to social justice, peace-building and resignification of culture as a force for change and positive social transformation.
